Wii + DS = Wiids(weeds)

Ok so I’m not sure who keeps up with the Wii and the DS or who did their homework and paid attention to all the launch time info and rumors but the revolution is upon us at last! Unfortunately it’s coming in the form of Pokemon games and a few components haven’t quite shown up on the scene.  So lets have a look at the latest developments.

The first thing which I commented on here. Has finally come about. The DS does in fact interact with the Wii. The first game to use it is the new Pokemon Wii game. You use the DS to call the shots for your Pokemon in such a way that your opponent won’t be able to see what you are doing. This should make head to head play more interesting. I give it only a few more months before the football games come rolling in with this feature. It does seem ideal.

The second thing that Pokemon is bringing to the table is supposed to be voice chat over wifi in game. I don’t remember where I read that so unfortunately I can’t confirm this one. I have been able to confirm there is a VOIP application on the way that will let you talk to your friends as though the DS is a cell phone.

Finally the stage is set for the return of the light gun in the form of an attachment to the remote control which adds a handle and trigger system to the remote. How long till this peripheral comes out and instead of just watching our character wield the duelies we get to feel the heft in our own hands!?

The parts that are still missing are a DS web browser, Wii mp3/video player and Wii’s online multiplayer games. I think the latter is probably what will seat Nintendo in either first or second spot in the next gen console war and finally put the nail in the coffin for the PS3.

Wii rocks!!! Yes Guitar Hero again!

Guitar HeroBecause it hasn’t been repeated enough yet. I’m ordering my pink hair band style wig right now! The real question will be if this is going to be the game that will force Nintendo to get things in gear to make the Wii shop channel the all around market place to rival the 360 market place?  Will Wii be buying new music for guitar hero with our Wii Points or is this going to be some what fudged and forgotten about like multiplayer and additonal content is for the current crop of Wii games? Please Nintendo poke and prod game developers to get it together!

Flipsyde, Abortion and the facts…stupid huh?

Ok so I was poking around on after having downloaded the new Norah Jones album and I ran across Flipsyde. Flipsyde is something of a rap/pop version of Lincoln Parks rock/pop style. The thing that strikes me about Flipsyde is the amount of genuine feeling in the music. So much so that Happy Birthday caught me off guard and started me thinking on the subject of abortion. So, in true tekchipian style I decided to consult some facts and logic. But first I wanted to share the video with every one who reads.

Ok so its sad and everything when abortion happens. It’s also biblically negative. I can find you a million links and a crap ton of scripture references and expound on those. That’s not what I’m looking to do here. I’m just going to expound on some thoughts I had and who knows may be it’ll change some minds or at least set some minds in motion.

In true geek fashion I decided I needed some cold hard numbers. A benchmark if you will. Not so much of abortion rates and all that politically skewed crap. I’m looking to make a decision for my self. So I tried to find info from non-biased sources. I found some info on

According to webmd’s time line of fetal development by week 4 there are more than 250 cells and a visible structure to the cells that defines all the parts of a human being. Thats pretty darn early. By week 6 there is a heart beat and there is a human shape to the cells. Webmd mentions “legs” as not being well defined. I little note between week 4 and 6 is the whole heart beat thing. We define a person as being dead when they fail to have a heart beat. We know that people can not have a heart beat for a period of time and that we can still revive them. So needless to say there is a little period of time between no heart beat and actually dead and gone. Doesn’t it stand to reason then that we should give the beginning of life as much credit as the end of life? Week 12 sees organs as well defined along with limbs and the afore mentioned parts. I’m not going to go on because the real concern/debate with abortion is when does life start. I think beyond week 12 it’s pretty obvious that it has all ready started.

I’m not really looking to start a huge debate here just trying to look at the facts. Looking at the numbers it seems anything beyond 3 or 4 weeks is killing a living human being. People get their panties in a wad over stem cells and the ethics of that and yet with babies and abortion we’re talking a lot more cells and structure than just stem cells. May be more people should be getting their panties in a wad over abortion too? Regardless I was touched by the message of the Flipsyde video and I’m digging the rest of the racks on this album. Lil something for your mind and your stereo.

Apple, supply and demand.

Apple iphoneSo this new Iphone thing has an uncertain future at best. At least in it’s current state. “Why?!” you may ask is that? Ok so it’s true that it’s an Apple Inc. product and that kind of gives it a marginally higher chance of survivability but it has a good number of problems to over come first. Not least of which is supply and demand.

Problem number one is legal. Cisco tried to play nice with Apple over some trademark issues with the name iphone. Apple likes to do things their way. Play by their rules and isn’t  playing ball over the name. Not yet any way. I think in the near future either Apple is going to simply pay out for the name in order to keep it. Or they are going to change it. Apple Phone any one? Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

Problem number two is price. $500 for a phone? Holy crap! Ok so it has some neat features and everything but according to apple it isn’t even going to be expandable in the software department. Even my $100 Fusic is. On top of that my Fusic kills the music when calls come in and via the sprint store I get to see album art and stuff too. Oh yeah and back to that expandability thing. I can download any java based app to do what ever I want. I’ve got gmail, map quest, weather and just about any other flip’n app I can think of. Don’t get me started on games. So why the heck would I even consider paying out half a grand for a phone!? Cause it’s touch screen? Read the last sentence over a few times and then think how stupid that sounds. Ok so the price needs to come down. That will happen over time but problem 3 is what is going to effect problem 2 the most I think.

Problem 3 is one of supply and demand. Apple wants the cash and thats the bottom line. They know they have to have a slick and friendly product to create the demand. They also have to make it available to every one. This is where they need the work. They went with Cingular because they are linked to AT&T which means brand recognition but they arn’t going to see the sales that really makes them the cash till they diversify with the phone and go to other providers. Basically they are limiting their market by sticking with one provider. This is not going to fly as most people are rather entrenched in their phone providers. I’m sure as heck not going to pay to break my contract and then pay some more for a way way way over priced phone and a new contract all at once. The demand is going to force Apple to bring the phone to other providers and those providers are going to pay Apple to give them the phone. That is how supply and demand are going to make Apple the bank. I give it a year or less before Apple gives the phone up to at least one other provider. The larger demand is going to help drive the price down as well.

If the phone runs a full fledged copy of OS X as Apple claims then there should be no good reason that they don’t open the phone for development by others. OS X and Apple have been doing nothing but gain market share off of how nice OS X plays with Windows and other OSes. This part doesn’t exactly make the most sense. Iphone must have been gotten a hold of by the same guys that insist on Apples DRM.

I’ll own an iphone, or what ever it’s called, when it drops to $200 or less and is offered by Sprint.

Mole! Moley Moley Moley Moooole!!!

ITunesSo Apple makes some of the sexiest products on the planet. I gotta give them props for that. Not only are they sexy but they are functional much as I would imagine most models are as well. But Apple has this big blemish that I just can’t get past. I keep trying to avert my eyes but it’s one of those things that just sticks out at ya. It reminds me of Mr. Powers reaction to the mole. What I’m actually talking about is the DRM Apple wraps it’s music/video in.

The Apple store is doing well and has tons of content. So why are services like posing any kind of a threat at all? Lack of DRM. I can download what I want and play it on what ever player, computer, stereo I want to and not have to worry about being limited. Kind of like when I buy a CD. Do they still sell those? And now there is word of record companies dropping DRM on for sale discs all together. Thank goodness some one is starting to get it.

BonjourNet any one?(Apples own torrent for Itunes) $10 says Jobs reads this. Patents it. And it comes out next year and I dont see a dime.
